Pune: A video has recently gone viral, depicting Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) officials disposing collected garbage into a river after the conclusion of the Ganesh festival. In a statement, the PMC acknowledged that their employees were observed throwing garbage. This matter was brought to the attention of the Guardian Minister’s Office, asking PMC to decide to take action against these individuals.

Economist Ameet Singh expressed his concerns, stating that there are approximately 3000 Ganesh Mandals that generate a significant amount of garbage. These mandals often distribute prasad on plastic plates, resulting in a large accumulation of plastic waste from decoration items and other sources. While the PMC is now addressing the issue by taking action against their employees, my question is why the littering of plastic was allowed in the first place.

Rupesh Kesekar, another resident, pointed out that fines are only being imposed on ordinary citizens. He urges the PMC to remove the employees responsible for this incident and, if they are on a contract basis, terminate their contracts. Kesekar also criticized the PMC for dumping garbage into the river, arguing that they have no right to question others when they themselves are engaged in such practices.

Umesh Pawar, another concerned resident, emphasized the importance of preserving natural resources and insisted that strict action should be taken against the employees involved in this act of waste disposal.
