Fish Shortage Spurs Price Hike; Chicken Offers Budget-Friendly Alternative in Pune

The Ganesh Peth fish market is experiencing high fish prices because of a limited supply from both the eastern and western coasts of the country. As demand rises in anticipation of the fasting season in March, traders are finding it difficult to obtain enough fish, which has kept prices high compared to last week. In contrast, the plentiful supply of poultry has resulted in a 20% decrease in chicken prices, offering some relief to consumers.

On Sunday, the market saw a diverse range of fish being sold:

Deep Sea Fish: Approximately 10-15 tonnes, including premium varieties like Pomfret, Halwa, and Surmai.

Bay Fish: 200-400 kg, featuring species such as Indian Mackerel, Red Snapper, and Soundale.
