From Playgrounds to Podiums: Why School Sports Matter – A Look at OrbiSports 2025–26
Pune, November 23: As schools across the country rethink what holistic education truly means, one message is becoming increasingly clear—sports are no longer optional; they are essential. Experts and educators agree that structured sports programmes help shape confident, resilient and well-rounded students, bridging the gap between academic learning and real-world skills.
The Growing Importance of Sports in Schools
With rising academic competition and screen dependency among children, physical activity within school environments has taken on renewed significance. Educators note that the playground has become a crucial space for developing traits that students may not gain within the classroom.
According to child development specialists, participation in sports contributes to:
- Improved discipline and time management skills
- Enhanced emotional resilience and problem-solving abilities
- Higher levels of confidence and self-esteem
- Teamwork, communication and leadership qualities
- Better physical and mental health
Schools that integrate sports into their core curriculum report improved student behaviour, better classroom engagement and stronger peer relationships. These benefits extend to children across age groups, regardless of athletic ability. As one education expert noted, “Sports teach young people how to win with humility and lose with dignity—both essential life skills.”
OrbiSports 2025–26 Showcases This Philosophy in Action
This emphasis on sports was clearly visible at OrbiSports: The Annual Athletic Meet 2025–26, held by The Orbis School, Keshav Nagar, on November 23 at SRPF Ground 1. The event brought together students from Classes 1 to 12, turning the venue into a lively arena of athletic energy and competitive spirit.
The meet began with a disciplined marchpast by the four houses, led by the Student Council and NCC cadets. The coordinated display set the tone for a day that highlighted both sporting talent and sportsmanship.
Younger students from Classes 1–5 participated in engaging fun races, drawing enthusiastic cheers from parents and spectators. Older students competed in flat races and relay events, demonstrating speed, stamina and strategic thinking.
The drill presentations emerged as a notable highlight. Students performed synchronized routines representing multiple sports disciplines, enhanced by Zumba movements and house-coloured flags that created striking visual patterns across the field. The precision and creativity displayed reflected weeks of preparation.
The event was graced by Chief Guest Ms. Avantika Narale and Guest of Honour Ms. Aum Gujrati, both young athletes with national and international achievements. Their presence offered powerful encouragement to participants, reinforcing the message that every sporting journey begins on a school playground.
A Step Toward Holistic Education
As the meet concluded, educators and parents alike agreed that events like OrbiSports highlight the vital role of sports in shaping future-ready students. By promoting fitness, teamwork and resilience, school sports continue to play a decisive role in guiding children from playgrounds to podiums—both on the field and in life.
