From The Hills Of Coorg To The Fields Of Koraput, India’s Coffee Story Brews Global Fame
New Delhi, October 27, 2025: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday lauded the growing international recognition of Indian coffee, crediting the country’s diverse cultivation regions for its rising global appeal. Speaking in the 127th edition of his monthly radio programme Mann Ki Baat, the Prime Minister highlighted that coffee produced across Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and parts of eastern and northeastern India is enhancing India’s reputation in global markets.
“Indian coffee is becoming very popular all over the world. Be it Chikmagalur, Coorg and Hassan in Karnataka; Pulney, Shevaroy, Nilgiri, and Annamalai in Tamil Nadu; the Nilgiri region on the Karnataka-Tamil Nadu border; or Wayanad, Travancore, and Malabar in Kerala — the diversity of Indian coffee is truly remarkable,” Modi said.
He also praised the growing prominence of coffee from Koraput in Odisha, noting that the region’s unique agro-climatic conditions make it ideal for cultivating high-quality Arabica beans. “Koraput coffee is gaining popularity, and many people, including women and professionals who left corporate jobs, are finding new livelihoods and success in coffee farming,” he added.
The Koraput region has around 5,000 hectares under coffee cultivation, supported by the Tribal Development Co-operative Corporation of Odisha Ltd (TDCCOL), which oversees processing, grading, and marketing of locally grown beans.
India primarily cultivates two varieties — Arabica and Robusta — with Karnataka contributing nearly 70 percent of the nation’s total coffee production, followed by Kerala and Tamil Nadu. Andhra Pradesh and Odisha have emerged as promising non-traditional coffee-growing regions.
According to official data, India’s coffee exports grew by 12.5 percent to reach USD 1.05 billion during April to September this fiscal year, reflecting the increasing demand for Indian-origin coffee across global markets.
