Dehradun, October 27, 2025: The Uttarakhand government has announced that all vehicles entering the state from outside will be subject to a green tax starting this December. The move aims to curb vehicular pollution, safeguard the environment, and promote cleanliness across the hill state.

According to officials, different tax slabs have been set based on vehicle type—₹80 for small vehicles, ₹250 for small cargo vehicles, ₹140 for buses, and between ₹120 and ₹700 for trucks, depending on their weight.

State Additional Transport Commissioner Sanat Kumar Singh said that Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras installed at border check points will capture the registration details of vehicles entering Uttarakhand. “Sixteen cameras were already operational, and the number has now been increased to 37,” he said.

The transport department has appointed a private vendor to manage the collection of the green tax. Once the ANPR cameras record a vehicle’s registration, the system will automatically send the data to the vendor’s software. The software will then filter out Uttarakhand-registered, government, and two-wheeler vehicles before forwarding the relevant information to the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI).

Singh explained that through NPCI, the wallet number linked to the vehicle owner will be identified, allowing the green tax amount to be automatically deducted and transferred to the state transport department’s account.

Officials estimate that the initiative could boost the state’s revenue by nearly ₹150 crore annually while encouraging eco-friendly transportation and responsible tourism.
