Megha Rajendra Babar is widely regarded as a committed grassroots leader whose work at the civic level continues to resonate with residents of Kondhwa. With deep local roots and hands-on administrative experience, Babar has consistently focused on addressing everyday issues faced by citizens, especially in underserved neighbourhoods.
Her political journey began in 2007, when she was elected to the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) from Ward No. 122 – Mithanagar on a Shiv Sena ticket. That election became a landmark moment in Maharashtra’s municipal history, as Babar registered one of the narrowest victories ever recorded—winning by just a single vote. She secured 2,290 votes, edging past her opponent who polled 2,289 votes. The razor-thin margin highlighted not only the value of every vote but also the faith residents placed in her leadership.
During her tenure from 2007 to 2012, Megha Babar served as Chairperson of the Bibvewadi Ward Office, where she gained valuable insight into civic administration and governance. Residents recall her tenure as one marked by accessibility and responsiveness to local concerns.
Several key civic initiatives were undertaken during her term. She submitted a formal proposal to the PMC Deputy Commissioner, Umakant Dangat, for the development of a Muslim cemetery at Survey No. 42 in Kondhwa Khurd, addressing a long-pending community requirement. The Dattaji Gawhane playground, an important recreational space for local youth, was also developed during her tenure.
She also organised Aadhaar card issuance programmes.
Babar emerged as a strong voice for residents by leading morchas against the PMC on critical civic issues. She spearheaded protests demanding safe and potable drinking water for Kondhwa residents, highlighting persistent supply and quality concerns. She also led a morcha against civic authorities over alleged inaction against private hospitals involved in illegal sex determination practices, calling for strict enforcement and accountability.
Her contribution extended beyond infrastructure and protests. To promote digital education, she donated two computers and a printer to Dugad High School, helping improve computer literacy among students.
Additionally, water supply projects worth ₹38 lakh were implemented in areas such as Mitha Nagar, Sai Baba Nagar and Nawazish Park through MLA Local Area Development funds.
Today, Megha Rajendra Babar’s track record continues to position her as a leader residents associate with ground-level action, civic accountability and sustained engagement with Kondhwa’s pressing challenges.
