There are also allegations that a total of 1.35crore have been squandered by the contractor and the concept of permanent arrangement has not been considered.

Pune:

The Pune Municipal Corporation has arranged temporary tanks to immerse idols of Lord Ganesh and the arrangement of nirmalya and previously made immerssion tanks are now lying deserted.

Every year, the municipal administration organises tanks at various ghats on the banks of the river and iron tanks in different parts of the city for Ganesh immersion. However, in order to avoid the crowding of citizens during the Corona period, PMC had arranged mobile immersion tanks in 2020 and 2021. In the first year there were a total of 30 and in the second year 60 rotating immersion tanks are put into operation.

This year around, 150 mobile immersion tanks have been arranged. There are also allegations doing the rounds that a total of 1.35crore have been squandered by the contractor and the concept of permanent arrangement has not been considered.

The administration has claimed that devotees who come for immersion in the immersion tanks on the banks of the river immerse the idols in the river instead, hence the administration has not readied these tanks. It is being alleged that the immersion tank was not made operational so the concept of revolving tanks should work.

Asha Raut, Deputy Commissioner, Solid Waste and Management Department said, “Various arrangements have been made by the Municipal Corporation to prevent citizens from immersing Ganesha idols in the river. The municipal corporation has appointed sanitation workers to pick up garbage accumulated there on a daily basis.”

Also, arrangements have been made at 263 idol collection centers and Nirmalya collection centers. There are soil collection centers even after the immersion of Shadu idols.”

Vivek Velankar, RTI activist said, ” This is a money earning exercise. The tax amount paid by the citizens is being used for personal gains. It is shocking to know that Rs 1.35 crore tender was floated for 150 mobile immersion tanks”
