What began as a completely routine elevator ride in a Mumbai residential building turned into a frightening brush with disaster within seconds. The incident took place at Anmol Towers, a residential complex located opposite a petrol pump in Goregaon West. A woman entered the building’s lift carrying a trolley, expecting nothing more than a normal trip. Soon after, a man stepped in with a large plastic bag packed with balloons, followed by another young man wearing a backpack. The lift doors closed, sealing all three inside the confined space.

For a brief moment, everything appeared normal. Then, without warning, the balloons suddenly burst. In an instant, flames erupted inside the elevator, filling the small enclosure with fire and smoke. CCTV footage installed inside the lift clearly shows how quickly the situation escalated from ordinary to terrifying.

As the woman briefly turned toward the mirror, the balloons ignited, most likely triggered by a spark or static discharge. Hydrogen gas, which was reportedly used to fill the balloons, is highly flammable and can ignite easily, especially in enclosed areas like elevators. The fire spread rapidly, briefly engulfing the camera’s view.

Reacting on instinct, the occupants rushed to escape. The lift doors opened, and all three managed to get out just in time before the flames intensified further. Two of them sustained minor burn injuries, but fortunately, no lives were lost.

Authorities later confirmed that the balloons were hydrogen-filled, commonly used for decorations and roadside sales. Officials have repeatedly warned against carrying gas-filled balloons in enclosed spaces such as elevators due to the high risk of fire. This incident has once again highlighted those dangers.

The video of the explosion has since gone viral, sparking widespread concern over safety practices in residential buildings. Housing societies and citizens have been urged to stay alert and strictly prevent the transportation of hazardous materials, including flammable gas-filled balloons, within apartment complexes.
