The much-anticipated Goa Carnival is scheduled to commence on February 28, 2025, featuring lively float parades that will traverse the coastal state starting March 1. This official announcement from the Goa Tourism Department, made on Tuesday, has generated excitement among visitors.

The Goa Carnival is thought to have originated in the 16th century, introduced by the Portuguese who governed the area. It is a pre-lenten festival and embodies Goa’s 450-year connection to Portuguese culture. Initially, it served as a celebration before the 40-day fasting period of Lent, a significant time in the Christian calendar.

Today, the Goa Carnival draws considerable inspiration from Brazil’s Rio Carnival and was revitalized in 1965 by Goan musician Timoteo Fernandes. It has transformed into a spectacular public event that highlights Goa’s diverse cultural heritage, featuring traditional music, dance performances, and elaborate floats.

Each year, the festivities are led by the appointed King Momo, who famously proclaims, “Eat, drink, and make merry!” as he guides the carnival parade.

This year, Cleeven Mathew Fernandes, a proud resident of Benaulim in South Goa, has been selected to lead the carnival as King Momo. After a comprehensive selection process involving four candidates, Fernandes emerged as the chosen one to embody joy, abundance, and community spirit during the festivities. As King Momo, he will take charge of the renowned float parades, playing a vital role in the celebration.

The Goa Carnival is set to unfold in various cities throughout Goa from February 28 to March 4.

February 28 – Porvorim

March 1 – Panaji (Opening Parade)

March 2 – Margao

March 3 – Vasco da Gama

March 4 – Mapusa & Morjim

Every destination boasts its own unique parades, street performances, music concerts, and local delicacies, all contributing to an exhilarating carnival atmosphere. According to reports, the most impressive and lavish parade is set to occur in Panaji in March. Be sure to catch the King Momo Parade in Panaji as well, featuring stunning floats.

On March 4, the grand finale will unfold with a masquerade ball, where thousands are anticipated to don red and black attire, transforming the city streets into a vibrant celebration of dance, music, and happiness!
