Google has launched a new memory feature for its Gemini Advanced AI chatbot, enabling it to remember and reference previous conversations. While this enhancement is significant for AI interactions, it may raise privacy concerns for some users. Fortunately, Google will provide an option to disable this feature. According to the company’s latest blog post, this update aims to make future interactions smoother and more relevant. The tech giant claims that the new capability will enhance Gemini’s functionality by allowing it to recall and build on prior chats, resulting in more helpful responses for users.

To enhance privacy, Google allows users to manage their stored information. Users can review their chat history, delete specific entries, or set a time limit for how long their conversations are saved. They also have the option to completely disable the memory feature by turning off Gemini Apps Activity in the settings.

Previously, Gemini had limited memory capabilities, only recalling user preferences when asked. Now, it has expanded its memory to review entire conversations, which enables it to answer questions or summarize past discussions on specific topics. This means that Gemini can use information from relevant chats to generate responses, allowing users to continue conversations seamlessly without having to restart or search for old chats.

Before this update, users had to begin each interaction with Gemini from scratch, as it couldn’t reference earlier discussions. Now, users can easily request summaries of past chats or build on previous conversations without manually sifting through earlier threads. For example, if you previously discussed the solar system, you can simply ask Gemini to summarize that conversation, and it will retrieve the pertinent details from your past interactions.

This new feature positions Gemini Advanced ahead of its competitor, OpenAI’s ChatGPT. While ChatGPT can remember general information over time, it lacks the ability to directly recall or summarize specific past conversations on request. Gemini’s capability to utilize past interactions as a reference allows it to deliver more personalized responses, giving it a significant advantage in the rapidly evolving AI landscape.

Google has stated that users will have control over their stored chat history, with options to review, delete, or choose how long to keep past conversations. If necessary, users can also completely disable this feature by going to the Gemini Apps Activity settings in Google’s “My Activity” dashboard. Additionally, Gemini will notify users when it is drawing on previous chats to generate responses or related content.

The new memory feature for Gemini is being rolled out in English for subscribers of the Google One AI Premium Plan. It is accessible through both the Gemini web and mobile applications. Google has also indicated plans to introduce this feature in additional languages and to make it available to Google Workspace Business and Enterprise customers in the coming weeks.
