Tata Motors, a leading automotive manufacturer, is taking significant steps to enhance the electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure in India. The company has set an ambitious goal to increase the number of EV charging points to 400,000 by the year 2027.

Through its EV division, TATA.EV, Tata Motors is launching an initiative called ‘Open Collaboration 2.0’, which aims to establish 30,000 public fast chargers. This initiative involves forming partnerships with charge point operators (CPOs) and oil marketing companies (OMCs) to develop charging facilities in critical areas, including highways, to facilitate long-distance travel for EV users.

Shailesh Chandra, Managing Director of Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles and Tata Passenger Electric Mobility, emphasized the importance of this initiative stating, “To enable the exponential growth of EVs in India, we’ve launched ‘Open Collaboration 2.0’, aiming to expand the charging network to over 400,000 points in the next two years, in partnership with leading CPOs.”

These charging stations will be accessible to all EV manufacturers and brands, promoting convenience and creating a collaborative ecosystem that benefits EV users, CPOs, and infrastructure developers alike, as highlighted in the company’s statement.

Tata.EV is planning to establish a TATA.EV Mega Charger network as part of its Open Collaboration 2.0 initiative, which will provide superfast charging options. To achieve this, Tata.EV has entered into agreements with Tata Power, ChargeZone, Statiq, and Zeon to set up 500 EV mega chargers within the next two years.

In the initial phase, these mega chargers will be installed in important cities and along major highways. Each superfast charger will feature four charging bays and will prioritize TATA.ev customers for access and service, along with offering tariff benefits to them.

Additionally, the company has announced its intention to introduce a centralized charging helpline for customer inquiries and a unified payment wallet for easier transactions. The open collaboration effort has successfully expanded public charging capacity to over 18,000 chargers in just 15 months.

TATA.ev has had a notable influence by setting up over 150,000 home chargers, 2,500 community chargers, and 750 chargers at TATA dealerships in more than 200 cities, as reported by Tata Motors.

This progress aligns with Tata Group’s efforts to strengthen its electric vehicle (EV) initiatives in light of the increasing adoption of EVs. In 2024, EV registrations in India surged by 30% compared to the previous year, approaching the 2 million mark. However, it’s worth mentioning that over 1.1 million of these registrations were for two-wheelers, while the adoption of EVs in the car segment remains relatively low.

Nonetheless, the Indian EV market is anticipated to expand rapidly, supported by government incentives from both the central and state levels, falling costs, and improved charging infrastructure. The market features a mix of startups and established firms, with projections indicating it could grow to $110.74 billion by 2029.
