Govt Denies FASTag Discontinuation from May 1, 2025: MoRTH Issues Clarification
In response to widespread social media chatter, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has categorically denied claims that the FASTag system will be discontinued nationwide from May 1, 2025.
In an official clarification released recently, the ministry labeled these reports as “false and misleading,” emphasizing that no such decision has been taken to replace FASTag. “There is no plan to discontinue the FASTag system from May 1,” the ministry stated, urging the public to disregard unverified messages circulating on digital platforms.
Where Did the Confusion Start?
The confusion appears to stem from the government’s ongoing efforts to modernize toll collection mechanisms. News about trial runs of a new ANPR-FASTag based barrier-less tolling system—which uses Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) technology—sparked speculation that the current FASTag infrastructure would soon become obsolete. However, MoRTH clarified that these initiatives are still in the experimental phase. Tenders have been issued only for limited-scale testing, and any nationwide implementation will depend on the outcome of these trials as well as public feedback.
What Is ANPR-Based Tolling?
The proposed system uses high-resolution cameras to scan vehicle number plates and match them with existing FASTag accounts. This enables toll deductions without requiring vehicles to stop at toll plazas. In cases where payment fails, an e-notice may be issued, and the respective FASTag account could be temporarily blocked until dues are cleared.
Potential Advantages (If Implemented)
If the ANPR-based tolling system proves successful and is implemented on a broader scale, it may bring several benefits:
Seamless Movement: Vehicles can drive through toll plazas without stopping, reducing congestion significantly.
Time Efficiency: Smoother traffic flow can lead to shorter travel times for commuters.
Enhanced Travel Experience: Drivers will benefit from a more convenient and uninterrupted journey.
Despite these promising developments, the ministry reiterated that FASTag continues to be the official toll payment system for all national highways. The public is advised to continue using FASTag and avoid acting on speculative or unofficial reports.
