Govt to Launch Air Taxi Services in Delhi, Mumbai, Pune by 2026: Aviation Minister

India’s Push for Advanced Urban Mobility & Regional Air Connectivity

To tackle rising traffic congestion in metro cities like Delhi, Mumbai, and Pune, the Indian government is set to introduce indigenously developed air taxi services, with trial runs expected by 2026, Union Civil Aviation Minister Kinjarapu Ram Mohan Naidu announced in Pune on Friday.

The announcement was made during the National Conference on Challenges in Aerospace for Viksit Bharat 2047, organized by the Aeronautical Society of India at Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam Auditorium, Pashan.

Air Taxi Development & Future of Indian Aviation

Naidu highlighted India’s growing presence in the global aviation industry, stating that more than 35% of aircraft components are now manufactured domestically, including helicopter equipment. The government is actively working on expanding air transport and developing air taxis as a futuristic mobility solution, he added.

India’s Expanding Aviation Infrastructure

The Civil Aviation Ministry is also focusing on enhancing regional air connectivity with an ambitious plan to construct 50 new airports in the next five years. By 2047, India aims to have over 200 operational airports, with Noida and Navi Mumbai airports nearing completion and set to launch flights soon.

Drone Industry to See Massive Growth

Naidu further revealed that India currently has around 30,000 operational drones, with a target of increasing this number to three lakh by 2047. To support domestic production, the government plans to reduce import duties on drone equipment and encourage indigenous manufacturing.

Aerospace Experts and Officials Join Conference

The conference saw participation from leading DRDO, ISRO, and aerospace industry officials, emphasizing India’s commitment to achieving self-reliance and innovation in the aviation sector.

With air taxis, new airports, and drone advancements, India’s aviation roadmap is set to revolutionize urban transport and establish India as a key player in global aerospace by 2047.
