HDFC Bank Announces UPI Downtime On Two Days In December For System Upgrade
The bank has scheduled early-morning maintenance windows that will temporarily suspend UPI payments for customers.
HDFC Bank customers have been advised to prepare for two planned service interruptions this month, as the bank carries out major system upgrades aimed at improving digital performance and transaction reliability. The bank has confirmed that UPI services will remain unavailable for four hours each on December 13 and December 21.
According to the advisory, the maintenance work will take place in the early hours of both days. The upgrade activity is scheduled from 2:30 am to 6:30 am, a period chosen to minimise disruption during peak usage. During this window, customers may be unable to make UPI payments, initiate transfers, or complete app-based digital banking tasks that rely on UPI rails.
HDFC Bank stated that the system enhancement is part of its regular technology strengthening efforts. The bank emphasised that the temporary suspension is essential for smoother performance, better security, and the long-term stability of digital transactions. Once the work is completed, customers are expected to experience faster processing and fewer interruptions during high-traffic hours.

The announcement is especially relevant for individuals who use UPI for early-morning business transactions, travel bookings, medical needs, or automated payments. The bank has advised users to plan critical payments in advance to avoid inconvenience. Card transactions, ATM withdrawals and net banking (excluding UPI-linked functions) are expected to continue working normally during the maintenance window.
Digital payment volumes in India typically peak during the festive and year-end period, making system upgrades crucial for sustaining high server loads. HDFC Bank has said that these improvements will help support growing demand for faster and more secure payment solutions as more customers shift to digital ecosystems for routine transactions.
With UPI being one of the most widely used payment methods in the country, any planned downtime requires early communication to ensure that users are not caught off guard. The bank has reiterated that only the specified maintenance hours will be affected and normal operations will resume immediately afterward.
The announcement also highlights a broader trend across the banking industry, where financial institutions are increasingly investing in backend infrastructure to support rising digital traffic. Scheduled downtimes, though short, remain an essential part of this transition.
Customers are advised to keep alternate payment options ready during the two maintenance windows, especially for time-sensitive needs. HDFC Bank is expected to issue reminders closer to the dates to ensure wider awareness.
