Pune, May 22, 2025: Climate conditions across the country, especially Maharashtra, are rapidly changing, with several regions already witnessing the onset of pre-monsoon showers. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), intense rainfall activity is expected over the next six to seven days along the western coastal belt of India.

Heavy to Very Heavy Rain Forecast for West Coast

The IMD has forecast extremely heavy rainfall in parts of Gujarat, Konkan, Goa, Karnataka, and Kerala. A low-pressure area has developed over the east-central Arabian Sea near the southern Konkan-Goa coastline, which is likely to intensify and move northward by the evening of May 23, 2025. Due to this, widespread heavy to very heavy rains are expected in these regions from May 22 to 26.

Konkan and Goa will experience the heaviest rainfall from May 22 to 24, while coastal Karnataka is likely to be hit by intense showers on May 24, according to the IMD advisory.

Monsoon Arrival Likely in Kerala Within 2–3 Days

Favorable conditions are developing for the southwest monsoon to officially arrive in Kerala within the next 2 to 3 days, marking the beginning of the 2025 monsoon season. Meanwhile, parts of Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, and Chandigarh are under heatwave alerts, with temperatures soaring in several districts.

Rainfall Impact in Maharashtra

In Guhagar, Ratnagiri district, the intensity of rain increased sharply post-noon today, causing waterlogging in many areas. The sudden downpour has delayed pre-sowing agricultural activities and adversely impacted mango cultivators. A red alert has been issued for the district today and tomorrow, urging residents to remain cautious.

Similarly, in Yavatmal district, pre-monsoon showers accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning have continued for the past three days. Since this morning, light drizzle has been reported. While the rain has brought much-needed relief from the sweltering heat and is favorable for kharif farming preparations, it has also slightly impacted summer crops and vegetable plantations.

Key Highlights:

  • Red Alert issued for parts of Konkan, Ratnagiri, and Goa.
  • 6–7 days of heavy to very heavy rainfall expected across western coast.
  • Monsoon onset in Kerala likely within 2–3 days.
  • Heatwave warnings remain in effect for parts of Rajasthan, Punjab, and Haryana.

Public Advisory: Residents in red-alert areas are advised to stay indoors during intense rain, avoid waterlogged roads, and follow local administration advisories for safety.
