Maharashtra Weather Alert: Next 36 Hours Crucial as Pre-Monsoon Intensifies; Heavy Rain, Red Alert for Coastal Districts
Mumbai, May 23, 2025: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast intense pre-monsoon activity across Maharashtra, with the next 36 hours deemed critical due to a deepening low-pressure system over the Arabian Sea. According to Shubhangi Bhute, head of the Mumbai Regional Meteorological Centre, the system is expected to intensify and move northward, bringing heavy to very heavy rainfall across the Konkan region, Mumbai, and surrounding areas.
The IMD has issued a red alert for Ratnagiri and Raigad and an orange alert for Mumbai, Thane, and Palghar, citing risks of thunderstorms, strong winds up to 60 km/h, and very heavy rainfall. Fisherfolk have been advised not to venture into the sea along the Maharashtra and Gujarat coasts over the next 2–4 days due to rough conditions.
Favorable Conditions for Monsoon Onset in Kerala

The IMD’s detailed forecast also confirms that favorable atmospheric conditions are developing for the southwest monsoon to arrive in Kerala within 2–3 days. A low-pressure zone in the east-central Arabian Sea is strengthening, creating ideal conditions for monsoon onset.
