According to State Inspector General of Registration (IGR) Hiralal Sonawane, since the majority of these properties were registered over the previous 20 years, his office will require enough time to locate the sale and transfer documents of 45 old grant bungalows (OGBS) in Pune cantonment.

In order to identify illegal sales and transfers as well as unauthorized occupiers, the then-director of defence estates, Saurav Ray, wrote to the IGR on January 31 asking for the sale and transfer documents of these 45 OGBS in Pune cantonment on a “top priority” basis.

A list of forty-five OGBS, including those on Queens Garden, Middle Road, Napier Road, Dr. Coyaji Road, Tarapore Road (formerly Lothian Road), Cross Road, and Staveley Road, was annexed by Ray.

According to Hiralal Sonawane, they have the survey numbers, bungalow numbers, and road names from the director of the defence estate’s office, but this information is insufficient to locate the documents from twenty years ago. Their officials have been ordered to obtain these particulars. To help them with their task, they require PAN details pertaining to these properties.

In his letter, Saurav Ray said that the office had learned of numerous illegal bungalow sales and purchases within the Pune cantonment limits, all without the government’s prior consent. The cantonment area is currently home to a large number of people who have bought these bungalows by purposefully hiding information.

The letter also stated that there are security implications because it has been discovered that dishonest people illegally bought a bungalow using records from the Enforcement Directorate. In addition, builders and promoters have unlawfully sold a number of prestigious bungalows that they had previously owned. Since cantonments are primarily used as military quarters, any intrusion by such individuals or organizations into prime bungalows is cause for grave concern, especially in cases where the Local Military Authority (LMA) lacks defence land for legitimate purposes.
