Team India faced a major setback in the World Test Championship (WTC) Points Table after suffering a 30-run defeat against South Africa in the first Test at Eden Gardens, Kolkata. Chasing a modest target of 124 runs, India collapsed for just 93, handing the visitors a crucial win in the two-match series.

South Africa, who were placed fourth before the Kolkata Test with a 50% points percentage, have now surged to the second position. Their points percentage has risen to 66.67%, giving them a strong advantage in the ongoing WTC cycle.

India, who were third heading into the match with 61.90%, have dropped to fourth place with a reduced 54.17% points percentage. The defeat marks India’s third Test loss of the current WTC cycle, following two earlier defeats in England.

Proteas spinner Simon Harmer delivered a match-winning performance, claiming 8 wickets across both innings and dismantling India’s batting lineup. Meanwhile, captain Temba Bavuma anchored South Africa’s second innings with a valuable unbeaten 55, the only 40+ score registered by any batter in the entire Test.

This victory marks South Africa’s first Test win on Indian soil in 15 years, giving their WTC title defence significant momentum. For India, the loss also brings scrutiny, as it becomes their second Test loss at home under coach Gautam Gambhir while chasing a target under 150 runs — a rare and concerning statistic.

India’s home chasing record remains mixed, with only one successful chase of a three-figure target in 13 attempts at this venue.

With the series standing at 1-0 in favour of South Africa, the pressure now shifts heavily onto India as they look to bounce back in the second Test.
