India’s lineup for the Champions Trophy showcases a blend of experienced veterans and emerging young talent.
The revelation of India’s squad for the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy has ignited discussions, particularly highlighting Shubman Gill’s appointment as the team’s vice-captain, which has emerged as a key topic of interest.
During the squad reveal, chief selector Ajit Agarkar provided insights into this important decision while addressing the media.
“Gill has been vice-captain in Sri Lanka as well. You always want to be on the lookout for leaders. I won’t look into it much but a lot of the feedback for these decisions comes from the dressing room,” says Agarkar.
At just 25 years old, Gill has positioned himself as one of India’s top batsmen in every format, accumulating 2,328 runs in 47 one-day international (ODI) innings with an impressive average of 58.20. His strong performance not only highlights his talent but also showcases his emerging leadership qualities, making him an ideal second-in-command to captain Rohit Sharma.
The complete India lineup for the 2025 Champions Trophy includes: Rohit Sharma (captain), Shubman Gill (vice-captain), Yashasvi Jaiswal, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, Rishabh Pant (wicketkeeper), KL Rahul (wicketkeeper), Hardik Pandya, Axar Patel, Ravindra Jadeja, Washington Sundar, Kuldeep Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, and Arshdeep Singh.
The confidence in Shubman Gill is evident. After the tour of Sri Lanka, Gambhir, Rohit, and their colleagues have once again designated him as the vice-captain. This decision indicates that the 25-year-old is solidly included in India’s future leadership strategy, particularly in white-ball formats.
