India’s campaign in the 2026 T20 World Cup Super 8 stage got off to a disastrous start as the Men in Blue were handed a 76-run defeat by South Africa at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday, February 22. The defending champions struggled with the bat from the outset, losing early wickets in the powerplay and failing to recover in a chase of 188.

The Indian innings began disastrously as Ishan Kishan, Tilak Varma, and Abhishek Sharma fell cheaply within the first six overs, leaving India reeling at just 31/3. The top order collapse set the tone for the rest of the innings, as the batting unit could not cope with the mounting required run rate. The Men in Blue were eventually bowled out for 111 in 18.5 overs, marking their heaviest defeat in T20 World Cup history.

Captain Suryakumar Yadav reflected on the loss, emphasizing the crucial role the powerplay played in determining the outcome. “Overall, if we see, we bowled really well, but we could have batted a little better,” he said during the post-match presentation. “Sometimes, you’ve got to think, if you’re chasing 180-185, you can’t win the game in the powerplay, but you might lose the game in the powerplay. We lost too many wickets in the powerplay and then we couldn’t have small, small partnerships which we wanted for chasing 180-185, but that’s part of the game. We learn from it, we’ll sit back and then come back stronger.”

Despite the batting failure, India had put South Africa under pressure with the ball early on. Jasprit Bumrah and Arshdeep Singh restricted the Proteas to 20/3, but a 97-run partnership between David Miller and Dewald Brevis for the fourth wicket swung the momentum in South Africa’s favor. In the final over, Tristan Stubbs smashed Hardik Pandya for back-to-back sixes to help South Africa post a formidable 187/6.

Suryakumar also addressed the broader mistakes in the team’s performance, saying, “I hope we bat well, bowl well, and field well. Keep it simple. We will try to do the same. From overs 7 to 15, they batted really well, and then we made a comeback. We bowled very well, but we could have batted better. We didn’t get the partnerships we needed. This is part of the game. We will learn from this, sit together, discuss, and make a comeback.” His comments underscored the issues India faced in all three departments during the match.

Individual contributions were limited for India, with Suryakumar scoring 18 and Washington Sundar managing 11 runs. By the 10th over, India had lost five wickets for just 51 runs. Hardik Pandya’s 18 runs in the 15th over, Shivam Dube’s 42, and Rinku Singh’s failure to score failed to stabilize the innings. Marco Jansen wrapped up the innings by claiming the final two wickets.

South Africa’s innings, on the other hand, was powered by Miller’s 63 and Brevis’ 45, providing the backbone for their total. Tristan Stubbs’ unbeaten 44, including 20 runs in the last over, ensured South Africa crossed the 187-run mark. For India, Bumrah took three wickets while Arshdeep Singh claimed two, but it was not enough to defend the total.

Looking ahead, Suryakumar expressed confidence in the team’s ability to bounce back in their next Super 8 match against Zimbabwe in Chennai on Thursday, February 26. The focus will remain on simplifying the approach, building partnerships, and executing better under pressure.
