The Athletics Federation of India (AFI) has unveiled a formidable 28-member squad for the upcoming Paris 2024 Olympics, showcasing a blend of seasoned champions and promising debutants. Leading the charge is Neeraj Chopra, India’s gold medalist in men’s javelin throw from Tokyo 2020, who will be joined by Kishore Jena, a debutant in the same event.

Among the women athletes, Annu Rani, gold medalist at the Asian Games, will compete in javelin throw. The team comprises 17 men and 11 women, including notable athletes like Avinash Sable in men’s 3000m steeplechase, Tajinderpal Singh Toor in shot put, and Priyanka Goswami in race walking.

Muhammed Anas, a veteran in the men’s 4x400m relay, will make his third consecutive Olympic appearance, underscoring his experience. Newcomers like Parul Chaudhary, excelling in both the 3000m steeplechase and 5000m race, highlight the squad’s depth and versatility.

However, some athletes faced challenges. Murali Sreeshankar, despite meeting the long jump entry standard, will miss out due to injury, while Jeswin Aldrin remains hopeful pending AFI’s final decision.

The team includes athletes across various disciplines such as long jump, high jump, and relay events. Each event adheres to the Olympic rule limiting countries to three athletes per event and gender, except for the mixed marathon race walk event where only one athlete per gender is permitted.

The AFI selection criteria balanced performance and potential, ensuring representation across a wide spectrum of track and field events. As the countdown to Paris 2024 begins, the Indian athletics contingent stands poised to make an impactful presence on the global stage, building on past successes and embracing new challenges with determination.

The Indian athletics team for the Paris Olympics reflects both experience and fresh talent, ready to compete and inspire on the world’s biggest sporting platform.
