India’s defence capabilities are set to receive a major boost as the Indian Navy prepares to commission its first squadron of MH-60R Seahawk helicopters at INS Garuda in Kochi, Kerala. ”This significant development held today at 4:30 pm.” The move is being hailed as a pivotal moment in India’s ongoing journey towards modernizing its defence forces.

The MH-60R Seahawk, a maritime variant of the Black Hawk helicopter, is part of a 24-aircraft foreign military sales contract inked with the US government in February 2020. The inaugural Seahawk squadron took flight today, featuring the six helicopters already delivered to the Navy.

Designed for diverse operations, including anti-submarine warfare, anti-surface warfare, search and rescue, and medical evacuation, the Seahawk boasts advanced weapons, sensors, and avionics. The Indian Navy emphasizes that these capabilities align seamlessly with their maritime security needs, addressing both conventional and asymmetric threats.

Armed with ”AGM-114 Hellfire missiles, MK 54 torpedoes, and advanced precision weapons, the twin-engine Seahawk helicopters can operate from frigates, destroyers, and aircraft carriers.” Having undergone rigorous testing in Indian conditions, the helicopters are fully integrated into the naval fleet.

According to the Navy, the MH-60R Seahawk will significantly enhance India’s blue-water capabilities, extending operational reach and supporting sustained naval operations across vast maritime domains. The commissioning of these helicopters in the INAS 334 squadron is expected to strengthen the Navy’s operational capability in the Indian Ocean region, particularly in response to increasing Chinese military activities in the area.

“The commissioning of the Seahawks underscores the Indian Navy’s steadfast dedication to fortifying maritime security, aligning seamlessly with the Government of India’s visionary goal of ensuring security and growth for all in the region,” stated the Navy, emphasizing their commitment to safeguarding the nation’s maritime interests.
