With rising layoffs in the IT sector, Infosys cites repeated assessment failures as reason for trainee exits; offers career transition support through free training and outplacement aid.

In yet another round of job cuts, Indian IT major Infosys has dismissed 195 trainees who failed to clear internal assessment tests, bringing the total number of trainees let go since February to over 800. This development adds to growing concerns over job security in the country’s IT industry, especially for entry-level tech professionals.

Internal Assessments Lead to Trainee Exits

According to internal sources, the terminated employees had been undergoing training for roles such as System Engineers (SE) and Digital Specialist Engineers (DSE). An internal email reviewed by one of the affected trainees read:

“Following the results of your final assessment attempt, we regret to inform you that you have not met the qualifying criteria for the ‘Generic Foundation Training Program’ despite extended preparation time, multiple doubt-clearing sessions, mock assessments, and three opportunities to pass.”

The company confirmed in the communication that these individuals would not be continuing in the apprenticeship program.

Training Background and Compensation

Among the 195 trainees impacted in this latest wave, nearly 250 individuals had received training via online learning platforms such as NIIT and UpGrad. Infosys is providing each dismissed trainee with one month’s ex-gratia salary along with formal relieving letters.

Despite multiple queries from The Economic TimesInfosys has not issued an official public statement regarding the latest round of layoffs.

Career Support and Outplacement Initiatives

To cushion the blow for the affected trainees, Infosys has rolled out career transition support services. Around 150 trainees have opted for outplacement assistance, aimed at helping them secure jobs in the Business Process Management (BPM) sector or other IT-related roles.

Infosys is also offering free upskilling programs through its training partners. These include:

  • 12-week BPM training module for alternate industry placement.
  • 24-week course in IT fundamentals to prepare candidates for re-entry into the tech job market.

These programs are fully funded by Infosys and made available through collaborations with UpGrad and NIIT.
