Pune | April 29, 2025 — A distressing incident at a luxury high-rise in Baner has raised serious concerns about worker safety and negligence, after a young labourer was seen cleaning an outer ledge on the 20th floor—without any safety harness or protective equipment.

The shocking scene unfolded at a 30-storey residential complex where a visitor first noticed security guards anxiously looking skyward. Following their gaze, the visitor was stunned to witness the youth balancing precariously on a narrow ledge, scrubbing its surface with no visible safety gear.

According to eyewitnesses, a woman inside the apartment appeared to be instructing the worker, who silently complied, risking his life for what many presume was a meagre payment. “What kind of desperation makes someone do this? This wasn’t bravery—it was forced risk. If something had gone wrong, they would’ve simply said he acted on his own,” a resident remarked, visibly disturbed.

The premium society—consisting of six towers labeled A to F—is home to high-income residents including business owners, corporate executives, and professionals. Despite the upscale surroundings, the treatment of labourers appears to fall short of basic safety standards.

The incident not only underscores the perils faced by informal and migrant workers, but also calls into question the role of residents, housing committees, and facility managers in ensuring worker safety. Experts note that such violations are alarmingly common across Indian metros, where enforcement of labour rights remains lax.

A photo of the episode, discreetly taken by the visitor, has since circulated on social media, sparking debate over the ethical responsibilities of homeowners and housing societies. “This isn’t about blame—it’s about asking why this continues to happen in 2025. Should any human be asked to put their life on the line just to clean a corridor?” the witness added.

The incident has reignited calls for stricter regulations and monitoring in residential societies, with activists urging civic authorities to introduce mandatory safety compliance checks and hold violators accountable.
