From big bids to last-minute bargains, here’s how every IPL team shapes up for the 2026 season

The mini auction for IPL 2026 has reshaped the squads of all 10 franchises, setting the stage for another fiercely competitive season. Held in Abu Dhabi, the auction saw franchises battle it out for 77 available slots from a pool of 359 players, with a combined purse of ₹237.55 crore in play. With team combinations now locked in, attention has shifted to how balanced — or risky each squad looks heading into the new season.

Several franchises focused on strengthening their core, while others opted for depth and flexibility. The auction underlined clear strategic differences, driven largely by purse availability and squad gaps after player retentions and releases.

Mumbai Indians enter IPL 2026 with a familiar star-heavy squad, retaining Rohit Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav, Hardik Pandya and Jasprit Bumrah. With just a few slots left and the lowest remaining purse, MI banked heavily on continuity rather than big auction splurges.

Chennai Super Kings continued their experience-first approach, keeping a strong Indian core and trusted overseas players. Their balanced squad reflects a preference for reliability and role clarity over experimental picks.

Royal Challengers Bengaluru once again built around Virat Kohli, supported by a mix of Indian batters and all-rounders. While RCB’s purse was relatively modest, they focused on plugging specific gaps rather than headline buys.

Kolkata Knight Riders emerged as one of the most aggressive teams at the auction table. With the highest remaining purse, KKR added depth across departments, clearly signalling a push for consistency after an uneven previous season.

Delhi Capitals and Rajasthan Royals adopted a measured strategy, targeting players to complement their existing cores. Both franchises focused on flexibility, keeping options open for mid-season adjustments.

Sunrisers Hyderabad strengthened their bowling attack, while Lucknow Super Giants prioritised balance between youth and experience. Gujarat Titans and Punjab Kings, operating with tighter purses, made selective additions aimed at role-based impact rather than marquee value.

Here’s a snapshot of how the teams stand after the auction:

Kolkata Knight Riders
Remaining slots: 13 | Purse balance: ₹64.3 crore

Chennai Super Kings
Remaining slots: 9 | Purse balance: ₹43.4 crore

Sunrisers Hyderabad
Remaining slots: 10 | Purse balance: ₹25.5 crore

Lucknow Super Giants
Remaining slots: 6 | Purse balance: ₹22.95 crore

Delhi Capitals
Remaining slots: 8 | Purse balance: ₹21.8 crore

Royal Challengers Bengaluru
Remaining slots: 5 | Purse balance: ₹16.4 crore

Rajasthan Royals
Remaining slots: 9 | Purse balance: ₹16.05 crore

Gujarat Titans
Remaining slots: 6 | Purse balance: ₹12.9 crore

Punjab Kings

With squads now finalised, the spotlight shifts to team balance, leadership depth and injury management as franchises prepare for the long IPL grind. While some teams look formidable on paper, history suggests that smart combinations and adaptability will matter more than star power alone when the tournament begins.
