BCCI may release first 20–25 matches by February-end, remainder after poll dates are announced

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is yet to announce the full schedule for the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026, and reports suggest that this year’s fixtures may be released in two phases due to upcoming assembly elections.

The IPL 2026 season is expected to be played from March 26 to May 31. However, assembly elections are scheduled in West Bengal, Tamil Nadu and Assam, creating logistical and security challenges for hosting matches in these states.

According to reports, the BCCI is considering announcing the first phase of the schedule — likely comprising 20 to 25 matches — by the end of February. The remaining fixtures could be revealed in mid-March, after the Election Commission announces the voting dates.

The delay is primarily linked to security arrangements. During elections, state police forces are heavily deployed for maintaining law and order, making it difficult to provide adequate security at major cricket venues such as Eden Gardens in Kolkata and the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium (Chepauk) in Chennai. With polling and counting activities underway, hosting high-profile IPL matches in these states may not be feasible.

In previous instances, when scheduling issues arose in Kolkata, matches were sometimes shifted to the Barsapara Stadium in Guwahati. However, Assam is also going to polls this year, limiting alternative venue options.

Reports indicate that the initial 2–3 weeks of matches could be held in states where elections are not scheduled. Once clarity emerges on election dates, the BCCI is expected to finalise and release the second phase of the schedule, ensuring that matches do not clash with polling days.

Another factor adding complexity is the proximity of IPL 2026 to the T20 World Cup 2026. Grounds such as Eden Gardens, Chepauk and other major venues may require preparation time after global tournament commitments, further affecting planning timelines.

The unusual delay has left fans, franchises and players awaiting clarity, as IPL schedules are typically announced well in advance. However, officials are expected to prioritise smooth conduct of both elections and the tournament while ensuring security and logistical efficiency.

An official announcement from the BCCI regarding the first phase of the IPL 2026 schedule is expected soon.
