Justice B R Gavai Appointed Executive Chairman Of NALSA
New Delhi, November 15, 2024 – Justice Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai, Judge of the Supreme Court of India, has been appointed as the Executive Chairman of the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA). The nomination, made by President Droupadi Murmu under the Legal Services Authorities Act, 1987, took effect from November 11, 2024.

Justice Gavai succeeds Chief Justice of India, Justice Sanjiv Khanna, as per the tradition of the second senior-most Supreme Court judge assuming the position. Previously, Justice Gavai served as Chairman of the Supreme Court Legal Services Committee (SCLSC).
Under Justice Gavai’s leadership, NALSA aims to advance its mission of providing free and accessible legal aid, particularly to marginalized communities, in line with the constitutional mandate of Article 39-A.
