Pune, July 7, 2026: The monsoon season brings much-needed relief from soaring temperatures, but it also increases the risk of flooding, waterlogging, power outages and traffic disruptions. To stay prepared during emergencies, experts recommend that every household keep a monsoon emergency kit stocked with essential supplies before severe weather strikes.

Here are the key items every family should include in their emergency kit:

Drinking Water and Non-Perishable Food
Store enough drinking water for at least two to three days, especially if your area is prone to flooding or interruptions in water supply. Keep non-perishable food items that do not require refrigeration or extensive cooking, such as biscuits, energy bars, dry fruits, canned food and instant meals.

First Aid Kit and Essential Medicines
A complete first aid kit should contain bandages, antiseptic solution, cotton, gauze, medical tape, pain relievers and a thermometer. Families should also keep at least one week’s supply of prescription medicines, including medication for children, senior citizens and people with chronic illnesses. Oral Rehydration Salts (ORS) should also be included to prevent dehydration.

Torch, Batteries and Power Bank
Power failures are common during heavy rainfall. Keep a flashlight, spare batteries, a fully charged power bank and charging cables ready. Battery-operated emergency lights can also be useful during prolonged power outages.

Hygiene Supplies
Stock essential hygiene items such as soap, hand sanitiser, wet wipes, tissue paper, sanitary products, garbage bags and disinfectants. Since stagnant water during the monsoon increases the risk of infections and waterborne diseases, maintaining proper hygiene is essential.

Rain Protection Gear
Keep umbrellas, raincoats, waterproof bags and an extra set of clothes in an easily accessible place. Waterproof pouches or covers for mobile phones and other electronic devices can help protect them from rain damage.

Preparing a monsoon emergency kit in advance can help families respond effectively during floods, power cuts or other weather-related emergencies. Authorities also advise residents to stay updated on weather forecasts and follow official advisories throughout the rainy season.
