Satara, July 7, 2026: The Satara district administration has ordered the closure of all major tourist destinations, including Mahabaleshwar, Panchgani, Kaas Plateau and Thoseghar Waterfall, following extremely heavy rainfall and a high alert issued for the Sahyadri mountain ranges.

The decision comes as Maharashtra continues to receive intense monsoon rainfall. Over the past 24 hours, Lonavala recorded 670 mm of rain, followed by 660 mm in Mulshi taluka in Pune district. Mahabaleshwar registered 513 mm of rainfall, one of the highest totals in the state, prompting authorities to take precautionary measures for public safety.

According to the district administration, all tourist destinations in Satara will remain closed until further orders. The closure was announced after the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued Orange and Red Alerts for the district and forecast extremely heavy rainfall across the Sahyadri ranges on July 7.

District Collector Santosh Patil has directed officials to implement comprehensive disaster management measures across the hilly talukas of Patan, Jawali, Mahabaleshwar, Wai and Satara, where the risk of landslides, slope failures and disruption of connectivity has increased due to continuous rainfall.

The administration has prohibited public entry to hazardous tourist spots, waterfalls, lakes and riverbanks. Warning boards declaring areas as “No Entry” and “Danger Zone” are being installed, while additional police personnel have been deployed at key locations to prevent overcrowding.

Authorities have also ordered the immediate evacuation of residents living in landslide-prone areas and dilapidated houses. Temporary rehabilitation centres have been set up in schools, colleges, community halls and other public buildings, with arrangements for accommodation, drinking water and medical assistance.

The district administration has appealed to the public to avoid unnecessary travel on ghat roads during the period of heavy rainfall. Roads will be closed immediately if streams, rivers or bridges become inundated, with barricades and police personnel deployed to restrict access.

Officials have been instructed to continuously update citizens on weather forecasts, dam water releases and river levels through social media, local media, public announcements and WhatsApp groups. Disaster management control rooms at all tehsil offices, municipal councils and panchayat samitis will remain operational round the clock. The administration has warned that strict legal action will be taken under the Disaster Management Act, 2005 against anyone violating the safety orders.

The tourist destinations closed until further notice include:
