With Makar Sankranti (or Uttarayan) just two days away, In Gujarat Police have launched a campaign to prevent injuries caused by stray kite strings. The festival, widely celebrated in Gujarat and Rajasthan with kite flying, often results in serious injuries to two-wheeler riders, who are particularly vulnerable to loose kite strings.

Rising Concerns Over Kite String Injuries

Though prohibited Chinese and glass-coated kite strings (manjha) are usually blamed for fatal injuries, the Gujarat Police have highlighted that even permitted cotton strings can cause severe harm. On December 29, a two-wheeler rider in Surat narrowly survived a throat injury caused by a kite string but required 20 stitches. In Vadodara and Anand districts, five such incidents were reported recently, with two fatalities.

To address these risks, police are encouraging the installation of kite string guards on motorcycles. These guards are steel looped wires attached to the handlebar, rising above the rider’s head to intercept stray strings. The strings do not entangle with the neck of the rider and are caught above the head.

These guards, which can be easily fastened to handlebars or rearview mirrors, have proven effective in reducing injuries. During Uttarayan in 2023, the state reported over 130 cases of cuts and injuries, prompting the popularity of this safety measure.

Why Are Kite String Guards Important?

While helmets protect the head, riders are still at risk of neck injuries from sharp kite strings, especially when traveling at high speeds. The kite string guard can prevent 90% of fatal neck injuries. It is one of the most effective safety measures. To promote their use, NGOs and local authorities are distributing free guards across Gujarat.

How to Install and Use Kite String Guards

According to roadside vendors, fixing the steel guard is simple and takes about 10 minutes. The guard can be secured using pliers or tongs and is reusable. Most customers ask us to install them, but some prefer to take extra pieces for their family members.

Cost of Kite String Guards

The price of kite string guards ranges from ₹80 to ₹150, with vendors earning a modest profit. Vendor revealed, “Each guard costs about ₹40 to make, and we sell them for ₹80 to ₹100. In the last month, I’ve sold about 600 pieces.”

For additional protection, riders can opt for protective neck braces, available in various designs, priced between ₹60 and ₹400 depending on material and padding.

A Safety First Approach

As kite flying is a cherished tradition, the Gujarat Police emphasize the importance of safety measures to minimize risks during the festival. By encouraging the use of kite string guards and neck braces, authorities hope to prevent tragic accidents and make this joyous occasion safer for all.
