The filmmaker criticised calls for relocation of stray dogs, urging animal lovers to house them if they truly care.
Amid growing protests against the Supreme Court’s directive to relocate stray dogs in Delhi-NCR, filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma has sparked debate with his sharp remarks on social media. Taking to X, Varma argued that relocation is an “illusion” and called out the “hypocrisy” of dog lovers who, he claimed, speak from “air-conditioned homes” while keeping their neighborhoods free of strays.
In a lengthy post, Varma wrote, “Relocation is nothing but a polite word for dumping the problem from one street to another. Clear one area and within days new dogs come in. At last count, there are nearly seven crore dogs. Where exactly are you planning to send them?”
He further alleged that many animal rights activists who advocate for stray dogs keep imported breeds as pets while the poor face the menace on the streets. “If they care so much, let them open their guest rooms for the strays,” he added.
Varma also referenced his earlier post from August 17, where he questioned the selective compassion of society. Citing the famous school poem All Things Bright and Beautiful, he noted that it ignores creatures like cockroaches, rats, snakes, and stray dogs, which he said can cause harm.
His remarks come after animal rights activists staged demonstrations in Delhi at Hanuman Mandir (Connaught Place), Ramleela Maidan, and Pacific Mall, Pitampura. The protests were held against the Supreme Court’s August 11 order instructing authorities to begin relocating stray dogs to municipal shelters.
