Pune- Liquor shops in the city have reported an increase in incidents where minors are picking fights with staff and creating chaos in the area after being denied the sale of alcohol due to recent restrictions, including mandatory ID checks at counters.

A member of the Pune District Wine Merchants Association has mentioned that several shops have to deal with underage youngsters visiting to buy liquor despite the legal drinking age being 25 years for hard liquor and 21+ for beer and wine. Some of them abuse or threaten staff, while others target the customers standing at the counter, causing disturbances for everyone in the area.

Shopkeepers are finding it challenging to manage brawls caused by underage youngsters when denied alcohol. According to a wine shop owner, these individuals are usually in the 17-22 age bracket and are already habitual drinkers. When refused the sale of alcohol, they start shouting or hurling abuse. They often arrive in groups, making it intimidating for the staff to handle such situations.
