In a pioneering move aimed at enhancing voter participation, Pune district has introduced polling stations within cooperative housing societies, marking the first instance of such an initiative in the country. Collector and District Election Officer Dr. Suhas Diwase announced this groundbreaking concept, revealing that 35 housing societies in Pune city have been designated as polling stations.

This innovative approach seeks to address the issue of low voter turnout, especially in urban areas, by bringing polling stations closer to residents. The decision to implement this initiative originated in Pune district and is part of efforts to increase civic engagement during the Lok Sabha general elections.

As preparations for the upcoming elections progress, the election schedule for the four Lok Sabha constituencies in the district has been finalized. Key dates include the release of the notification for the Baramati Lok Sabha Constituency on April 12, with the last date for filing nomination papers set for April 19, 2024. Similar timelines have been established for the Pune, Shirur, and Maval constituencies.

To ensure smooth conduct of the elections, basic facilities will be provided at all polling stations, including parking, medical facilities, and separate toilets for women. In addition, assistance centers will be set up in urban areas to guide voters and provide information about polling stations.

Technical preparations, such as the distribution of voting machines, have already commenced in the 21 assembly constituencies of the district. Counting of votes will take place at designated venues, with arrangements being made for security and coordination among various government departments.

To facilitate a seamless voting process, officers and employees in each assembly constituency are undergoing training on the use of electronic voting machines (EVMs) and voting procedures. With ample manpower and meticulous planning in place, authorities are confident of conducting the Lok Sabha elections peacefully and efficiently.

This pioneering initiative underscores Pune’s commitment to promoting democratic participation and fostering inclusive electoral practices. As the country prepares for the upcoming elections, the introduction of polling stations in housing societies sets a precedent for future electoral reforms nationwide.
