Beloved village dog makes miraculous journey from Pandharpur to Belagavi, earning a hero’s welcome.

Yamagarni village in Nipani taluk of Belagavi district recently witnessed a heartwarming celebration. A black indie dog named Maharaj, adorned with garlands, returned home after being lost for days. The dog had been separated from its owner, Kamalesh Kumbhar, in the crowded pilgrimage town of Pandharpur in South Maharashtra but managed to find its way back to Belagavi in North Karnataka, covering nearly 250 km on its own.

In the last week of June, Maharaj accompanied Kumbhar on his annual ‘Wari padayatra’ to Pandharpur. Kumbhar, a ‘Warkari’, participates in this pilgrimage every year on Ashadha Ekadashi and Kartiki Ekadashi. “Maharaj has always enjoyed listening to bhajans,” Kumbhar said, recalling how the dog once joined him on a padayatra to the Jyotiba temple near Mahabaleshwar.

During the pilgrimage, Maharaj got separated from the group. Despite searching extensively, Kumbhar couldn’t find the dog and returned home on July 14, assuming Maharaj had gone with another group. To his astonishment, Maharaj reappeared at his doorstep the very next day, looking well-fed and unharmed.

Overjoyed by the dog’s miraculous return, Kumbhar and the villagers celebrated with a feast, hailing the event as nothing short of a miracle. “We believe it was Lord Panduranga who guided him,” Kumbhar remarked, reflecting the deep spiritual connection of the journey.
