New LPG rules tighten booking, delivery and verification process; users must complete e-KYC and follow updated norms to avoid disruption

Major changes have been introduced in India’s LPG system, directly affecting how consumers book and receive gas cylinders. With rising supply pressure and efforts to prevent misuse, the government and oil companies have made the process more strict, digital and controlled.

One of the most important changes is Aadhaar-based e-KYC verification. Consumers who have not completed their e-KYC may face disruption in services, including denial of cylinder delivery in some cases. Authorities have made this step compulsory to eliminate fake or duplicate connections and ensure that subsidies reach the right beneficiaries. Those who have already completed the process do not need to repeat it.

Now, LPG cylinders will be delivered only after OTP verification. A Delivery Authentication Code (DAC) is sent to the registered mobile number, which must be shared with the delivery agent. This move aims to prevent fraud, wrong deliveries and illegal diversion of cylinders. Without OTP confirmation, delivery may not be completed.

The gap between two LPG bookings has also been increased. In urban areas, consumers may need to wait around 25 days, while in rural areas the gap can extend up to 45 days. This rule has been introduced to prevent hoarding and ensure fair distribution during supply constraints.

Consumers with access to piped natural gas may not be allowed to continue LPG connections in certain cases. Authorities are encouraging such households to shift to piped gas systems, and failure to comply could lead to cancellation of LPG connections.

Users who have not refilled cylinders for a long time may be marked as inactive. Such consumers may need to complete verification processes again before booking a new cylinder.

These changes come at a time when global energy supply disruptions and rising demand are impacting fuel availability. The focus is on preventing black marketing, ensuring fair distribution, digitising the system and improving transparency.

To avoid any interruption, users should complete their e-KYC, ensure their registered mobile number is active and updated, and follow OTP-based delivery procedures carefully. Keeping track of booking eligibility and refill timelines has also become important under the new rules.
