Maharashtra Bar Council Suspends Advocate Asim Sarode’s License for Three Months Over Remarks On Judiciary And Governor
Pune, November 3, 2025: The Maharashtra and Goa Bar Council has suspended the license of prominent Pune-based lawyer and human rights activist Advocate Asim Sarode for three months. The decision was announced on Monday following a review by a committee headed by Advocate Vivekanand Ghatge.
The action was taken after Asim Sarode made controversial remarks about the judiciary, the Governor, and the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly during a public event. His statements were deemed disrespectful and damaging to public confidence in the judicial system.
A complaint had been filed with the Bar Council alleging that Sarode’s comments were derogatory, irresponsible, and defamatory toward constitutional institutions. The complainant claimed that his words insulted the judiciary and created distrust among citizens. Despite being given an opportunity to issue a written apology on March 19, 2024, Sarode reportedly declined to do so.
The committee reviewed both the transcript and video footage of Sarode’s speech, where he was heard saying that “the Governor is useless” and that “the judiciary functions under government pressure.” The council stated that such remarks violate the ethical duties of an advocate, who is considered an “Officer of the Court.”
The Bar Council emphasized that lawyers must maintain dignity and respect toward judicial institutions and constitutional authorities. The committee concluded that Sarode’s statements breached this professional obligation.
As a result, Sarode’s license to practice law has been suspended for three months, preventing him from representing clients in court during this period. He has not yet issued any formal statement on the Bar Council’s decision.
