Pune: Short Circuit In AC Unit Triggers Smoke Scare At Balgandharva Rangmandir; No Injuries Reported
Pune, November 3, 2025 — A brief but alarming incident occurred at the iconic Balgandharva Rangmandir on Jangali Maharaj Road late Sunday evening when a minor blast was reported in one of the air-conditioning units. The mishap, which took place around 9:30 pm, led to smoke filling the auditorium just before a Marathi commercial play was about to begin.
According to officials, the small explosion originated from the AC unit located near the balcony area. Within moments, dense smoke spread through the hall, creating panic among the staff and a few early visitors waiting to take their seats.
The venue staff acted swiftly to control the situation. They immediately halted audience entry, switched off the electrical systems, and began ventilating the hall. The fire brigade was alerted but later confirmed that their intervention was not required as the smoke was cleared quickly.
A representative from the theatre management stated that the prompt action of the technical and security team prevented a potential fire hazard. Once the air was clear and the equipment was inspected, the audience was allowed inside, and the play resumed after a short delay.
Thanks to the quick response of the staff, no casualties or major damage were reported at the Balgandharva Rangmandir, one of Pune’s most popular cultural venues known for hosting plays and public performances year-round.
