Maharashtra Government Sets Minimum Age for Class 1 Admission at Six Years from 2026–27; Schools Issued New Guidelines
Students must complete six years of age by December 31, 2026 to qualify for Class 1 admission; rule applies to government, aided and private schools.
Maharashtra School Admission News | Education Policy Update
In a major decision regarding school admissions, the Maharashtra School Education Department has revised the eligibility rules for Class 1 admissions. Beginning with the 2026–27 academic year, only children who have completed six years of age will be eligible for admission to the first standard.
According to the new guidelines, students must turn six years old on or before December 31, 2026 to secure admission to Class 1 in the upcoming academic year. The government has directed all schools across the state to strictly follow this rule without any relaxation.
Rule Applies to All Schools
The revised age criteria will be applicable to all government, aided, and private schools across Maharashtra. The education department has issued a circular informing schools about the implementation of the new admission policy.
Earlier, some schools allowed children to enroll in Class 1 if they turned six just before the start of the academic year. However, under the revised rule, the December 31 cut-off date will now be the standard reference point, and exceptions will not be permitted.
Decision Linked to National Education Policy
Officials said the move aligns with recommendations under the National Education Policy 2020, which suggests that children should begin formal schooling only after completing six years of age following pre-primary education.
The new education framework known as 5+3+3+4 structure emphasizes age-appropriate learning stages, ensuring that children are mentally and emotionally prepared before entering formal schooling.
RTE Admission Process Underway
Meanwhile, the registration process for admissions under the Right to Education Act 2009 is currently underway. Authorities are planning admissions based on the number of seats available in schools and the demand from parents.
Mandatory Documents for Admission
Parents will need to submit several documents during the admission process, including:
- Birth Certificate of the child
- Parent’s identity proof
- Address proof
- Aadhaar card
Officials have clarified that the birth certificate will be the only valid proof for verifying the child’s age.
Why the Rule Matters
Education experts say starting formal education at the appropriate age helps improve cognitive development, emotional readiness, and overall learning outcomes while also allowing children to fully experience early childhood learning.
