Pune: A complete plastic ban in the state is the need of the hour. I will be discussing this with Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis today itself. Based on that, we will soon take a decision regarding the statewide plastic ban, assured Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar on Saturday.

Speaking at the inauguration of facilities including a veterinary bio-product manufacturing lab, a national vaccine reference testing lab, BSL-2 and BSL-3 labs, and a super-specialty veterinary hospital, Ajit Pawar stressed the urgency of banning plastic. He said plastic causes multiple problems, especially during the monsoon when blockages are often caused by it.

Pawar added, “I am personally keen on implementing the plastic ban. I will be flying to Mumbai from Pune today and will discuss this matter with the Chief Minister en route. A decision will be taken soon.”

Animal Husbandry Minister Pankaja Munde, also present at the event, said that starting June 6 (World Environment Day), a “No Say No Plastic” campaign will be launched under the animal husbandry department to raise awareness. She pointed out that cows are often found with plastic in their stomachs, which can lead to illnesses in children consuming their milk.

Pawar also commented on cleanliness, noting that in foreign countries, people are penalized for littering in public, and urged everyone to begin cleanliness from themselves.

He further informed that the proposal to accord agricultural-equivalent status to the animal husbandry sector is currently pending with the finance and planning department and will be taken up in the upcoming cabinet meeting on May 27.
