Maharashtra Weather Alert: Heavy Rainfall Predicted, Red Alert in 11 Districts as Low-Pressure Forms in Bay of Bengal
Maharashtra Weather Forecast for January 21: Changing Weather Patterns, Cold Conditions Continue; Rain Alert Issued
Maharashtra is bracing for intense rainfall over the next four days as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued Orange to Red Alerts across 11 districts. A deep low-pressure system has developed over the Bay of Bengal, accompanied by two additional low-pressure zones, altering wind patterns and fueling heavy showers across western India.
In the Konkan region, including Palghar, Raigad, Thane, Ratnagiri, and Sindhudurg, heavy to extremely heavy rainfall is expected. Mumbai has been placed under a Yellow Alert, though officials warn that rainfall intensity may rise over the weekend.
Elsewhere, Dhule, Nandurbar, Jalgaon, Nashik, Pune, Kolhapur, Satara, and Amravati districts are under an Orange Alert, while Latur, Dharashiv, Sangli, Satara, and Solapur are not under official warnings but may still experience humid and cloudy conditions. In parts of Vidarbha and Marathwada, a Yellow Alert has been issued for the next two days, with wind speeds reaching 40 km/h and thunderstorms likely.
The IMD has also warned that September could bring above-average rainfall in the state.
Meanwhile, reservoirs are filling rapidly due to the downpour. The Koyna Dam in Satara has reached 99% capacity, prompting authorities to open its gates for the third time this season, releasing over 15,700 cusecs of water. Similarly, Jamner in Jalgaon received heavy showers, bringing the Tondapur medium project to full capacity. In Akola district, significant rainfall has boosted water levels in local reservoirs, leading to controlled water releases and warnings for residents in low-lying areas.
With rain intensifying across Maharashtra and Gujarat, authorities are urging citizens to stay alert, avoid waterlogged areas, and follow safety advisories.
