Maharashtra’s Largest Highway with Helipads and Eight-Lane Capacity Set to Transform Connectivity
Stretching over 700 kilometers, the Mumbai-Nagpur Samruddhi Highway to reduce travel time to just 7 hours and boost regional development
Maharashtra is rapidly expanding its highway infrastructure with the construction of the state’s largest highway, the Mumbai-Nagpur Samruddhi Expressway. This extensive expressway spans over 700 kilometers and will pass through 10 districts and 390 villages, connecting Mumbai to Nagpur and cutting travel time from the current 16 hours to just 7 hours.
One unique feature of this expressway is its helipad facilities, with designated landing areas capable of accommodating up to four helicopters simultaneously. The project is expected to create significant employment opportunities and promote the development of remote areas.
Named the Hinduhridaysamrat Balasaheb Thackeray Maharashtra Samruddhi Mahamarg, this highway covers nearly 9,900 hectares. Once fully operational, it is expected to reduce travel time significantly while providing a future-proof, expandable route that could be widened to eight lanes.
Passing through 10 major districts, including Nagpur, Wardha, Amravati, Washim, Buldhana, Jalna, Aurangabad, Nashik, Ahmednagar, and Thane, the Samruddhi Highway will also connect an additional 14 districts, such as Chandrapur, Bhandara, Gondia, Gadchiroli, and Yavatmal. Known as India’s largest “Greenfield” highway, it also integrates eco-friendly measures, with over 1.1 million trees planted along its route to balance environmental impact.
In terms of infrastructure, the highway includes 65 flyovers, 33 major bridges, 274 minor bridges, 8 rail overpasses, 25 interchanges, 6 tunnels, and 189 underpasses. Additionally, specialized underpasses and overpasses have been designed for wildlife crossings to protect local ecosystems.
Along with improved connectivity, the highway will link to popular tourism destinations in Maharashtra, such as Shirdi, Bibi Ka Maqbara, Sula Vineyards, Trimbakeshwar Shiva Temple, Tansa Wildlife Sanctuary, Pench National Park, and the Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve. One of India’s widest highway tunnels, at 17.5 meters, is also part of this project, with Maharashtra’s longest 8-kilometer tunnel located in Igatpuri.
