Pune : The Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) staged a fierce protest on J M Road, Pune on Friday after the deadline set by the Supreme Court to put up Marathi boards on shops in the state expired in November last week.

Sainath Babar, MNS, Pune city president said, “We live in Maharashtra and signages must be in our Marathi language. The Supreme Court’s order is not being followed. The authorities have not take action against any shop.”

It is worthy to note that the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has also informed that if Marathi boards are not seen on the shops, punitive action will be taken by them.

Speaking to Pune Pulse, an MNS leader from Shivaji Nagar area said, “The deadline of the Supreme Court order to put Marathi boards on shops has ended. Hence, the MNS got aggressive & protested near shops on JM Road. Around 100 people participated in the protest. The protest took place at 11 am and lasted for 30 to 45 minutes. Boards of 1 to 2 shops written in English were damaged. 10 to 15 protesters have also been arrested by the police.”

As per further information, the boards of shops written in English were vandalized. Meanwhile, a minor scuffle was also seen between the police and MNS workers.

On Wednesday ( November 29), the Pune Municipal Corporation issued an order to take action against retailers who have not yet put up Marathi name plates/ or signages
