Tourists advised to switch to eco-friendly alternatives as hill station tightens rules to curb plastic waste

Matheran, one of Maharashtra’s most popular eco-sensitive hill stations, has introduced a new rule banning plastic raincoats from the upcoming monsoon season in a bid to protect its fragile environment.

The decision has been taken by the Matheran Municipal Council after concerns over increasing plastic waste, especially during the rainy season when thousands of tourists visit the destination for trekking and leisure.

Authorities observed that many visitors purchase cheap plastic raincoats during their trips and later discard them across roads, forest areas, and valleys. This growing waste has been causing visible damage to the region’s natural beauty and ecological balance, particularly around Matheran and nearby Neral.

To address this, the council’s Environment, Tourism and Planning Committee passed a resolution to completely ban plastic raincoats. The move will come into effect from the monsoon season of 2026.

Officials stated that this is not just a restriction, but a necessary step towards long-term environmental conservation. Matheran, being an eco-sensitive zone, already has strict controls on vehicles and plastic usage, and this new rule adds another layer of protection.

Tourists visiting the hill station will now be required to carry or use eco-friendly alternatives such as reusable rainwear. Authorities have also urged visitors to act responsibly and support efforts to preserve the destination’s natural charm.

The rule is expected to bring a behavioural shift among travellers while also reducing the burden of plastic waste management in the region.

With monsoon tourism set to begin in the coming months, officials hope that stricter enforcement and public cooperation will help maintain Matheran’s reputation as a clean and sustainable getaway.
