These mangoes are cultivated in Miyazaki Prefecture, located in Japan’s Kyushu region, which offers a subtropical climate with abundant sunlight and rainfall—perfect for mango farming. Although mangoes were first introduced to Japan during the Meiji Period (1868–1912), it was only in the 1980s that Miyazaki began focused cultivation of the Irwin variety, eventually giving rise to the high-end Taiyo no Tamago label.

The farming of Taiyo no Tamago mangoes involves an astonishing level of detail:
- Greenhouse Cultivation: The mangoes grow in temperature-controlled greenhouses to ensure consistency and quality.
- Sunlight Maximization: Each mango is individually suspended using strings to optimize sun exposure. Reflective materials are sometimes used to enhance color development.
- Protective Netting: As the fruit ripens, it is encased in fine mesh nets to allow natural drop without bruising, maintaining a flawless finish.

Only a select few mangoes earn the Taiyo no Tamago label. They must meet all of the following criteria:
- Minimum weight of 350 grams
- At least 15% sugar content, ensuring superior sweetness
- Deep red color covering at least two-thirds of the surface
- Uniform, blemish-free oval shape
Due to these stringent standards, only 10–15% of harvested mangoes qualify for this elite designation.
