Midnight Sweep in Pune’s Budhwar Peth: Police Conduct Massive Combing Operation from 12am to 3am
Pune, 11 February: In a strong show of enforcement and internal accountability, Pune Police carried out an extensive late-night combing operation in the Budhwar Peth area, triggering heightened activity across the locality well past midnight. The action came in the wake of disciplinary proceedings against a woman police constable from Faraskhana Police Station and was aimed at tightening control over illegal activities in the city’s red-light district.
The operation was launched after a woman police employee attached to Faraskhana Police Station was suspended. The suspension reportedly followed allegations that she failed to take action against a Bangladeshi woman said to be residing illegally in the red-light area. It was further alleged that the matter was not reported to senior officials and that there were financial dealings involved. Taking serious note of the incident, senior officers ordered an immediate combing operation to prevent such lapses and send a clear message of zero tolerance.
Acting on these directives, teams from the local police along with multiple units of the Crime Branch descended on Budhwar Peth in significant numbers. From midnight until 3 a.m., more than 50 houses were inspected as part of the drive. Every entry and exit point of the locality was placed under strict surveillance, with checkpoints set up at all major roads and at the mouth of each lane to monitor movement and verify identities.
In the area under the jurisdiction of the Shukrawar Peth Police Chowki, female police personnel conducted inquiries inside brothels, questioning women present on the premises. Several young men found loitering in the locality were also stopped and searched as part of the verification process.
During the operation, authorities focused particularly on suspected drug transactions, instances of minor girls allegedly being forced into prostitution, and the issue of Bangladeshi women living in the area without valid documentation. Multiple individuals were questioned in connection with these concerns.
The heavy police presence led to a tense atmosphere in Budhwar Peth for several hours, as officers continued their checks through the early hours of the morning. Police sources confirmed that investigations linked to the findings of the operation are still underway, indicating that further action may follow as inquiries progress.
