The Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) Pune division is gearing up to expand its electric bus fleet with the addition of two new charging stations at Swargate and Dapodi. This move is part of the corporation’s plan to introduce 5,000 electric buses (e-buses) in a phase-wise manner, with 200 e-buses allocated to the Pune division.

The two new charging stations, which are awaiting final approval, will have 18 charging points each. The Swargate charging station will cater to e-buses plying on the Kolhapur and Satara routes, while the Dapodi charging station will serve e-buses headed for Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar.

Currently, the MSRTC Pune division has 66 e-buses, which are charged at the main head office premises on Shankar Sheth Road. The introduction of the new charging stations will enable the corporation to increase the number of e-buses on the road, reducing its carbon footprint and promoting sustainable transportation.

The e-buses, which will be operated under the name ‘E-Shivai’, will be provided to different departments in a phased manner. The first E-Shivai was launched on the Pune-Nagar route in August 2023, and since then, e-bus services have been introduced on several other routes, including Pune to Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar, Ahmednagar, Nashik, Kolhapur, and Solapur.

The expansion of the e-bus fleet and the setting up of new charging stations are expected to enhance the public transportation system in Pune, providing commuters with a cleaner, greener, and more efficient mode of transport.
