The Maharashtra government has designated three laboratories to test for Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV), a respiratory virus that has been spreading rapidly in China and other parts of the world.

The three designated labs are the National Institute of Virology (NIV) in Pune, Kasturba Infectious Diseases Hospital in Mumbai, and All India Institute of Medical Science (AIIMS) in Nagpur. These labs will play a crucial role in testing throat secretion samples of suspected patients for HMPV.

In addition to testing for HMPV, these labs will also test for other common viruses such as SARI, seasonal virus, corona, and RSV. Genetic sequencing of positive samples will also be conducted to enhance surveillance and preparedness for HMPV, which has been reported to cause severe respiratory illness in some cases.

This move is part of the state government’s efforts to enhance its capacity to detect and respond to the virus. With the designation of these three labs, Maharashtra is better equipped to tackle the potential spread of HMPV and provide timely treatment to those affected.
