Civic officials have announced that two new additions to the Mumbai Coastal Road—a 7.5-km promenade and a vehicular underpass—are expected to be accessible to the public before this year’s monsoon season. Currently, the 10.58-km high-speed corridor serves as a route for vehicles traveling between Marine Drive and the Bandra Worli Sea Link (BWSL). Officials also noted that landscaping efforts are nearing completion and should be finalized within the next two months.

The coastal road project, valued at Rs 13,000 crore, has been accomplished by reclaiming 111 hectares of the Arabian Sea. Of this area, 70 hectares will be designated for public open spaces and promenades.

The walkway will extend alongside the coastal road’s southbound lane, running parallel to the beach. Spanning 20 meters in width, it will incorporate tactile tiles to ensure accessibility for individuals with disabilities, according to official sources. The design of the promenade is inspired by a concept from Hong Kong and will include palm trees and native shrubs. The young plants for this project have been sourced from nurseries across the country, including locations such as Delhi, Gujarat, Pune, and Kolkata.

“The promenade will extend between Priyadarshini Park (PDP) and Worli. It will comprise jogging tracks and seating areas along with multiple patches of green cover. The landscaping work is underway, and we aim to complete it by the end of May,” informs a civic official.

Alongside the promenade, the official stated that the 11-meter-wide traffic medians are being converted into green areas.

“Once the promenade is open, people can view the Arabian Sea more closely. There will be 20 pedestrian underpasses (PuP) that will provide access to the promenade from the landside. The work on the PuPs is also in the final stages, and they will be opened once the landscaping works are completed,” adds the official.

Next month, a 550-meter-long vehicular underpass (VuP) will be inaugurated for public use. This underpass is designed for drivers heading from Dadar and Prabhadevi towards the coastal road and is the sole VuP included in the 10.58-kilometer coastal road project.

Civic officials have indicated that this underpass is built to meet future traffic demands. Vehicles coming from the Sewri-Worli connector will have direct access to this underpass, allowing for a quicker route to the western suburbs or the southern end of Mumbai via the coastal road, thereby significantly cutting down travel time.

The underpass will extend beneath Khan Abdul Gaffar Khan Road, linking J K Kapur Chowk with the coastal road through the vehicular interchange at Bindoo Madhav Thackeray Chowk at the Worli sea face.
