In a shocking case that has sent waves of horror through Mumbai, a 24-year-old transgender individual has been sentenced to death by a special POCSO court for the kidnapping, rape, and murder of a three-month-old girl.

The court labeled it as the “rarest of rare cases” due to the heinous nature of the crime, which stemmed from the victim’s family’s refusal to give a ‘bakshish’ or tip after the child’s birth in July 2021.

The judge, Aditee Uday Kadam, condemned the defendant’s actions, describing them as barbaric and inhuman. The defenseless infant was treated with extreme depravity, reflecting the accused’s perverse mindset. The court’s decision to impose the death penalty reflects the gravity of the offense and aims to send a strong message against such atrocities.

The tragedy unfolded when the victim went missing on the night of July 8, 2021. The convict, residing in the same vicinity, had demanded ‘bakshish’ from the family earlier that evening. Despite their refusal, he returned later with an accomplice, abducted the infant, and later buried her body to conceal the evidence.

Medical examination revealed the cause of death as drowning along with unnatural genital injuries, indicating sexual assault. The court emphasized that there was no provocation from the victim’s family to incite such a gruesome act.

This case serves as a chilling reminder of the vulnerabilities faced by young children and the need for swift and stringent justice to deter such atrocities in the future.
