Mumbai-Goa Highway Update: Deadline Claims vs Ground Reality Raise Concerns

Despite fresh assurances, incomplete work and delays continue to cast doubt on the actual progress of NH66 ahead of the monsoon

The long-delayed Mumbai-Goa National Highway (NH66) is once again under scrutiny after Union Minister Nitin Gadkari stated that the project would be completed within a month. While the announcement has raised hopes, the ground reality suggests that significant work is still pending across multiple stretches.

Speaking at a programme in Sindhudurg, Gadkari expressed confidence about the project nearing completion. “Mumbai-Goa National Highway (NH66) will be completed within a month,” he said.

However, as per reports in ‘Sakal’, from various sections of the highway indicate a different picture. Several key portions, including flyovers, underpasses and connecting roads, remain incomplete. The gap between official claims and actual progress appears to be widening as delays continue to persist.

It is estimated that the project may require at least four more months to reach full completion. If the pace of work slows further during the monsoon, the timeline could extend even beyond that. The uncertainty has raised concerns among commuters who have been waiting for years for a smooth and faster route between Mumbai and Goa.

The highway has already witnessed multiple deadline extensions in the past due to issues such as land acquisition challenges, slow execution and technical hurdles. Even now, while some sections are operational, others continue to face bottlenecks that disrupt traffic flow.

Travellers using the route are still experiencing congestion, diversions and uneven road conditions in several patches. The promise of reduced travel time remains unfulfilled, as incomplete infrastructure continues to slow down movement.

The situation has also sparked discussions about the difference between announcements and on-ground execution. While progress has been made in parts, the overall project is yet to reach a stage where it can function seamlessly end-to-end.

With the monsoon season approaching, the urgency to complete the remaining work has increased. Any further delay could push the project timeline significantly, prolonging inconvenience for daily commuters and long-distance travellers.

The coming weeks will be crucial in determining whether the highway finally meets its long-awaited completion target or continues to face delays.
